這首詩歌是韓菲吉爾女士(Miss Frances Ridley Havergel,1836-1879)所作,她是英國聖公會一位牧師的女兒,而這位牧師在韓女士幼年時,不幸因罹患眼疾而導致雙目幾乎失明,但他仍能專心為聖詩譜曲,他的作品對當時英國教會,有很大的貢獻。韓女士十一歲便喪母,但自幼受到她父親的鼓勵與影響,而特別愛好音樂,尤其貝多芬與孟德爾頌等作家的一些名曲,她幾乎不用看譜就能彈得出來,可說是位音樂天才;不但如此,她七歲就能寫詩,並經常發表在教會雜誌上,這都是她努力下功夫所換來的。

在她二十三歲那年,她到德國一位牧師家中作客,當她疲倦的來到書房坐了下來,抬頭正好看見耶穌釘十字架的圖畫,似乎覺得耶穌的雙眼正在看著她,然後他仔細看到圖畫下面,有兩行字:"我為你這樣死了,你為我做了什麼?",當時她受了很大的感動而立刻拿起筆來,將心中的感觸寫了下來。可是寫完之後,又覺得沒有將心中的想法完全表達出來,便將它揉成一團,丟進火爐裏想把它燒掉,結果她又後悔了,趕緊將它從火中搶了回來,幸好還來的及,只燒焦了旁邊一點點,後來她去拜訪一位貧民院的老太太,順便試看看這位老太太對這首詩有何反應,沒想到老太太太喜歡了,於是韓女士便將它重抄一遍,拿給她父親尋求意見,她父親覺得相當滿意,並為它譜曲(可惜本首不是用此曲),隔年後,便印成單張發行,深受好評,且後來被選入教會詩集。本首詩之第一句"我曾捨命為你(I Gave My Life For Thee)",後因別人的建議而改為"救主為我捨命(Thy Life Was Given For Me)"。
